Opera Introduces Paste Protect to Thwart Clipboard Attacks

Opera's new Paste Protect feature automatically blocks malicious commands copied from websites, countering the rising threat of ClickFix social engineering attacks.

Opera has unveiled a security feature called Paste Protect, designed to neutralize clipboard-based cyberattacks before they can be executed. Integrated into the desktop browser and enabled by default, it represents the first native protection of its kind among major browsers. The feature specifically targets ClickFix attacks, a form of social engineering that has proliferated rapidly in recent months.

ClickFix attacks typically masquerade as innocuous troubleshooting prompts, such as fake CAPTCHA verifications or video playback errors. Users are instructed to copy a short command and paste it into their terminal, unwittingly executing code that can install malware, exfiltrate passwords, or grant remote access. Opera's Paste Protect combines existing clipboard hijack prevention with a new injection detection system that monitors clipboard activity and blocks suspicious content before it reaches the clipboard.

Users are notified of blocked commands, with the first 120 characters displayed for transparency. Developers can override the block for trusted sources or whitelist specific sites. The move comes amid alarming statistics: according to cybersecurity firm Huntress, ClickFix accounted for over 53% of malware-loading attacks last year. Apple had earlier introduced a similar safeguard in macOS Tahoe, warning users before pasting dangerous commands into Terminal. Opera's free update is available now, reinforcing the browser's commitment to proactive security.
