Coffee-delivery robots hit the sidewalks
The last-mile delivery race moves onto the pavement.
Fleets of coffee-delivery robots are starting to hit the sidewalks of major cities. Packed with on-board sensors, they navigate around obstacles and pedestrians with little human help.
For cafés, the appeal is simple: the machines cut costs on last-mile delivery and can work late into the night. They are still prone to the occasional glitch, and in a pinch a human has to step in.
If the idea catches on, companies plan to scale up their fleets quickly. Whether crowded pavements can handle them is another question entirely.
