Apple Opens Up App Store in Brazil to Third-Party Marketplaces
Apple has introduced major changes to its App Store in Brazil, allowing alternative app marketplaces and third-party payments.
Apple has announced significant changes to its App Store policies in Brazil, effective immediately. Developers can now distribute iOS apps through alternative app marketplaces and accept payments via third-party platforms. These changes, which apply to iOS 26.5 and later, were prompted by regulatory action from Brazil's competition regulator.
Alternative app marketplaces must be authorized by Apple and comply with ongoing requirements. For apps still distributed through the App Store, developers may include alternative payment methods or link to external websites. Apple has warned that these changes introduce privacy and security risks, particularly for children, and has implemented safeguards such as notarization and age restrictions.
Under the new fee structure, apps on the App Store will pay a reduced commission of up to 21% on digital goods, down from 30%. Many developers qualify for a 10% commission through programs like the Small Business Program. Apps distributed outside the App Store must pay a 5% Core Technology Commission. Developers must agree to updated terms by July 2026.
